About Us

Our Team - Previous Page

board members know at the time that they are  recruited that they are expected to give, to assist in raising funds and if appropriate to ask. Only the most enthusiastic members should help with asking. And we should provide framework training for it which should be on the board member manual , which acts as an orientation.

It includes:

  • how board members are selected
  • terms of office
  • duties and responsibilities
  • and a statement that all board members are expected to make annual and special gifts and to help secure other gifts

Additionally, I grappled with how to make it ethical to expect board candidates to have a seat with as big as contribution as possible, make the process not exclusive for those who bring more heart and brains than money, and make it be fair to both. Here's the solution...

We encourage contribution on a sliding scale. And we shine a light on the minimum contribution so far as to give a guideline and encourage high standards.

As I may already have conveyed; I am very interested in making this board structure and board process best of breed; a standard of excellence, and a synthesis of the best practices intelligently applied to our situation.

Our BOARD MANUAL ought to also include the pieces named below. Bylaws also have to be made intelligently, specific to our situation, and minimal.

Global freshwater consumption rose sixfold between 1900 and 1995 - more than twice the rate of population growth.  About one third of the world's population already lives in countries considered to be 'water stressed'  - that is, where consumption exceeds 10% of total supply.  If present trends continue, two out of every three people on Earth will live in that condition by 2025.

Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, in We The Peoples, 2000

Preserving our fragile Earth, and protecting our families, requires us to work together to restore our water, our air, and our land. Working together is the only way we can ensure that we will pass on this Earth, God's greatest gift, healthy and whole.

President Bill Clinton
December 3, 1998

I understood when I was just a child that without water, everything dies. I didn't understand until much later that no one "owns" water. It might rise on your property, but it just passes through. You can use it, and abuse it, but it is not yours to own. It is part of the global commons, not "property" but part of our life support system.
